Chapter 871
The steady beeping of the heart monitor slowed to a faint, dreadful flatline.
"Her heart has stopped," one of the doctors muttered, his voice filled with resignation. Another sighed heavily as he shook his head. "She's gone. We've done everything we could. President Locke, please accept our condolences."
Jordan was clutching Evelynn's hand with a grief-stricken expression when the door was thrown open with a sharp bang.
"Who said she's beyond saving?" A cold, commanding voice cut through the silence.noveldrama
Yvette strode in, her expression sharp despite the exhaustion evident in her tired eyes. Her lips were pressed into a firm line, and she carried herself with an unyielding determination.
"Ms. Murray!" Jordan's despair gave way to hope as his eyes filled with relief. He rushed toward her, his voice trembling. "You're here-thank God. Did you... did you succeed? Is the antidote ready? Evelynn doesn't have much time..."
"It's ready," Yvette said. Her voice was calm but carried a weight of urgency. Without another word, she moved swiftly to Evelynn's bedside.
The other doctors froze, their disbelief evident. One of them managed to stammer, "S-She actually finished the antidote? In just one hour?"
Stunned silence filled the room. Yvette was already renowned for her skills, but this was beyond anything they'd thought possible. Even the most celebrated medical experts couldn't have achieved what she just had.
"Great!" Jordan quickly helped Yvette prop Evelynn up, his hands trembling as he moved. Yvette wasted no time, carefully injecting the antidote into Evelynn's frail arm.
At first, the room held its breath as nothing seemed to happen. But then Evelynn stirred, her lashes fluttering open. Her gaze was weak and lucid.
"She's waking up!" Jordan exclaimed, his voice breaking with relief. "Ms. Murray, you did it. You saved her again—"
But before he could finish, blood began to trickle from Evelynn's nose and mouth. Her pale face turned an even ghastlier shade, and her body went limp once more.
"No!" Jordan's voice was a cry of despair as he grabbed Evelynn's hand, his relief shattering into panic. "Why is this happening? Evelynn, don't do this. Please!"
Yvette's expression darkened. She immediately pressed her fingers to Evelynn's wrist, checking her pulse Her heart sank as she realized the grim reality-the antidote had made her condition worse. Evelynn's organs were shutting down entirely.
"What went wrong?" Yvette's mind raced as she reached into her bag and pulled out her silver needles. Though utterly drained, she focused intently, her hands steady as she began administering acupuncture to stabilize Evelynn's failing body.
The room watched in tense silence as Yvette worked with surgical precision. Sweat beaded on her brow, her exhaustion apparent, but she refused to falter. The needles would buy Evelynn time, but Yvette knew it was only temporary.
As the procedure continued, Evelynn opened her eyes weakly. Her voice was barely above a whisper, but her words were heartbreakingly clear. "Yvette.. you don't... have to waste your strength on me... I know my body... is... reaching its limit."
This acupuncture method was incredibly taxing, and Yvette was performing it despite being utterly exhausted.
Evelynn gave a faint smile, her lips trembling. "I wanted so badly... to grow up and learn medicine from you... To be like you... saving lives. But... I don't think I'll get the chance..."
Her words were slow and labored, but she pushed herself to continue. "Yvette... there are... others. Children... they've been taken. They're being used... as experiments. If you can... save them. Don't let them suffer... like me."
Yvette's heart ached, but she forced herself to respond firmly. "I promise you, Evelynn. I'll save them. Every single one of them."
"Thank you," Evelynn murmured. Her lips curved into a faint smile, though her eyes glistened with unshed tears. She turned her gaze toward Jordan, who was watching her helplessly.
"Dad... please... help Yvette... save those children... Don't let anyone else... go through this."
What do you think?
