A Favor 182

Suddenly, a wave of tension swept through me, and my chest felt heavy.

I kept walking, refusing to stop or respond to Logan's question. A part of me wanted to snap back, to tell him he'd find out if he ever did die, but I held my tongue. He was someone I once loved, and I decided to keep a shred of decency.

Three minutes later, I emerged from the restroom, only to find that Logan was gone. I wasn't sure if he had returned to the private room or left altogether.

The thought of going back to that room, with its uncomfortable atmosphere, made me hesitate. Instead, I wandered over to the fish pond nearby and crouched down, watching the fish swim lazily

beneath the surface.

After a while, I heard the sound of footsteps approaching. They were familiar- steady and purposeful. I immediately recognized them as Ashton's.

I looked up, and sure enough, it was Ashton. But standing next to him was Alex.

"Ashton and Alex?"

My mind raced with questions.

"The boss?"

"Drake?"

I had suspected a connection between them before but had never been able to confirm it. I had even tried to test them separately, but they had both denied knowing each other. Now, seeing them together, I couldn't wait to hear how they would explain this.

"Ashton!" I called out, standing up.

Both men stopped and turned in my direction.

I had been crouched by the fish pond, so it seemed they hadn't seen me at first. Alex nudged Ashton, his tone curious. "Who's calling you? That voice sounds like..."

Before he could finish his sentence, Ashton was already walking toward me, his expression

unreadable.

"This spot is dangerous," Ashton said, reaching out to me. I thought he was going to help me up, so I extended my hand toward him.

Instead, his arm wrapped around me, and before I knew it, he had lifted me off the ground.

"Ashton, what are you doing-" I started, but he didn't let me finish.

He carried me a few steps away from the fish pond and gently set me down. "Aren't you supposed to be having lunch? What are you doing over here?" His sharp eyes darted around, clearly piecing

together that this was a restaurant and I had come here to eat.

His sudden embrace left me momentarily speechless. It took me a few seconds to gather my thoughts.

I glanced at Ashton, then shifted my gaze to Alex, who stood nearby with an amused, almost gossipy look on his face. "You and him... know each other?" I asked, pointing between them.

Ashton answered without hesitation. "Yes."

Then, with perfect nonchalance, he added, "We just met."

Alex stepped closer, a sly smile playing on his lips. "Ah, so Ms. Hart's boyfriend is you, Mr. Drake? That explains why you came to interview at my company."

"Wait, you interviewed at my company?" I asked, looking at Ashton in surprise.

I had thought Ashton had other plans after leaving Logan's company. I never imagined he would apply to the one I worked at.

That explained why he and Alex were together.

I looked at Ashton, my expression filled with doubt, but he seemed completely unfazed.

With a calm smile, he said, “Ms. Hart, aren't you going to welcome your new colleague?"

I blinked. "So... you got the job?"

It wasn't surprising-he was more than qualified. But something about the ease of

it all made me wonder. Had Alex hired him because he was genuinely impressed, or was there more to the story?

"Looking forward to working with you, Ms. Hart," Ashton said, extending his hand toward me.

He looked so serious that I was about to shake his hand, but Alex cut in with a smirk. "With your relationship, why stop at a handshake? You two should be hugging."

I was rendered speechless.

"Great idea!" Ashton agreed without hesitation, pulling me into his arms before I could protest.

"Perfect! Just perfect," Alex remarked, clearly entertained by the scene.

Even though Ashton and I were in a relationship, I couldn't help but feel embarrassed by the public DK display.

As I tried to pull away, I heard a soft, melancholy voice behind me.

"Logan, I don't know what to do. Tell me, what can I do to make your mom like me?"

It was Selene.

I froze, my curiosity getting the better of me.

"You don't have to do anything," Logan replied, his voice cold and distant.

"Why?" Selene pressed, her voice trembling.

I already knew the answer. Tessa didn't like Selene as a person. No matter what

she did, no amount of effort would change that.noveldrama

But Logan, trying to preserve some dignity for her, didn't make it explicit.

"Come on. Let me take you home," Logan said after a brief pause.

Selene didn't respond immediately. For a moment, I thought they would leave quietly.

But then Logan spoke again, his tone tinged with impatience. "Let's go. Unless you plan to go back and eat-can you even manage that?"
